Studies on the Teratogenic Effects of Salicylic Acid on Developing Rat Fetuses

Abstract
Sprague-Dawley pregnant rats received consecutive daily oral doses of salicylic acid at the dose levels of 70 and 150mg/kg from the eighth to thirteenth day of gestation, and their teratogenic effects were examined.
1. Significant decrease on the increase of the maternal body weight occured in 150mg/kg group.
2. There was no increase of the fetal mortality by treatment at 70mg/kg in rats, but in 150mg/kg group there was slight increase of the fetal mortality.
3. In 150mg/kg group, the fetal body weight gains were inhibited.
4. In 150mg/kg group, there was slight decrease of the fetal crown-rump length.
5. Slight decrease of the fetal brain weight occured in 150mg/kg group.
6. Various kinds of anomalies were observed only in the descendants of 150mg/kg group.
